Lasercut Walnut Pin
It took a few iterations, but I was able to develop a process for producing a few dozen of these pins. Itβs a walnut burl veneer on a black acrylic sheet with a sanded super-glue metal-dust inlay (which I learned from Wyrmwood).
The process was as follows:
- Laser cut several 1x1β squares from the acrylic
- Hand-cut and superglue a square of walnut veneer to each square
- Masking-tape the walnut face and return to the laser cutter (with a squaring jig)
- Cut the silhouette and etch the inlay pattern. Leave tape mask in place.
- Dust powder of choice (I had micron-sized powders for copper, aluminum, and brass for copper/silver/gold looking inlays)
- Drip low-viscosity superglue onto powder
- Sand glue flush (carefully) with rotary tool and sandpaper
- Sand lightly until smooth
- Varnish and glue on pin backing
