Lasercut Walnut Pin

It took a few iterations, but I was able to develop a process for producing a few dozen of these pins. It’s a walnut burl veneer on a black acrylic sheet with a sanded super-glue metal-dust inlay (which I learned from Wyrmwood).

The process was as follows:

  1. Laser cut several 1x1” squares from the acrylic
  2. Hand-cut and superglue a square of walnut veneer to each square
  3. Masking-tape the walnut face and return to the laser cutter (with a squaring jig)
  4. Cut the silhouette and etch the inlay pattern. Leave tape mask in place.
  5. Dust powder of choice (I had micron-sized powders for copper, aluminum, and brass for copper/silver/gold looking inlays)
  6. Drip low-viscosity superglue onto powder
  7. Sand glue flush (carefully) with rotary tool and sandpaper
  8. Sand lightly until smooth
  9. Varnish and glue on pin backing
